Heat Pump vs. Furnace & AC Combo: Which Is the Best Option?

Heat Pump Installation

A common question we often get is, “What’s the difference between a heat pump and a combination of Furnace and A/C?” Each system works differently to regulate your home’s temperature, ensuring your comfort throughout the year.

Before deciding between a heat pump and a furnace & AC combo, it’s important to understand which system will be the best fit for your home. At Air West Mechanical, with over 35 years of experience, we’re here to guide you through the decision-making process. Our team can assess your needs and help you choose the ideal solution for your home.

The Key Difference

The main difference between a heat pump and a furnace & AC is that a heat pump can both heat and cool your home, while an air conditioner only cools, and a furnace only heats.

A heat pump works year-round. In winter, it takes heat from the outside to warm your home, and in summer, it moves warm air out to keep your home cool.

A furnace & AC combo uses two separate systems: the furnace heats your home by gas or electricity, while the AC cools your home by moving warm air outside.

When to Choose a Heat Pump vs. Furnace & AC Combo

Heat Pump: Great for mild climates where winters aren’t too extreme. It's a solid all-in-one system that can save you space, reduce upfront costs, and improve energy efficiency in moderate climates.

The Downside?

A heat pump’s efficiency drops in extreme cold, making it less effective in harsh winters. In very cold climates, it may also need extra heating, which can use more energy.

Furnace & AC Combo: Best for areas with more extreme seasonal changes, where you’ll need reliable and efficient heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. This setup tends to be better in colder climates where a furnace’s heating power is essential.

The Downside?

In British Columbia, a furnace & AC combo can be more expensive to run, especially in milder areas, because heat pumps tend to be more energy-efficient.

So, Does That Mean a Heat Pump is the Best Option in British Columbia?

Yes, a heat pump could be the best option, especially in milder climates. However, it depends on where you live in B.C. For those in colder areas, we recommend reaching out to your Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN) member to determine which heat pump is best suited for your region. They may suggest a cold climate rated heat pump that can handle temperatures as low as -30ºC.

Heat Pump Rebates

There are rebates available for B.C. residents who want to switch to heat pumps. For example, you can receive up to $6,000 if you’re switching from gas, oil, or propane heating, or up to $2,000 if you’re currently using electricity for heating and want to switch to a heat pump.

Which System is Right for You?

We get it – choosing between a heat pump and a furnace & AC combo can feel like a lot to figure out, especially with all the options out there.

If you're in a milder area of B.C., a heat pump could be just what you need – it’s efficient, cost-effective, and works year-round. However, if you live somewhere where winters are harsh, the furnace & AC combo might be your best bet for comfort and reliability.

At Air West Mechanical, we’ve been helping families like yours make these decisions for over 35 years, so we’re here to make sure you’re not left in the cold (or the heat!) when it comes to choosing the right system.
